Demolition work starts for redevelopment of Porte de Ninove

2016-03-07 – Today saw the start of the demolition of buildings on the land between Chaussée de Ninove and Quai de l’Industrie, by the Canal. These disused buildings will be replaced by a two-hectare park which will improve the quality of life of local residents.

The project has three main objectives: to improve traffic flow on the Petite Ceinture inner ringroad (with a single junction ultimately replacing the three existing junctions on the Petite Ceinture, nearly 450 m of which will be completely transformed), to bring greenery to a district that lacks green spaces and to make the area safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The works budget is 22 million euros and is 98% funded by Beliris.

The demolition is part of the first phase of the redevelopment of the Porte de Ninove, which began in January 2016 with the removal of asbestos. The demolition will be followed by soil remediation work. The area under the former perfume factory is polluted with chlorinated solvents and mineral oils. Heavy metals have also been detected in the soil. This preparatory work will precede the area’s complete redevelopment.
