2012-03-23 – As part of ‘Brusselicious 2012, gourmet year’, the exhibition Brusselicious XXL, or BXXL, has been set up in the city with 35 monumental works based on five emblematic objects: a Brussels sprout, a bar of chocolate, a mussel and waffle, a glass of beer, and a giant cone of chips. They have been decorated, altered, customised and otherwise interpreted in original ways by a number of artists (photos of the works).

On the initiative of the government of the Brussels-Capital Region, VisitBrussels will be presenting this original backdrop in the capital’s best-known streets and squares from April to June. The 5-metre-high works will then be brought together from July to September in Brussels Park.

Several of these works can be found in the Region’s central districts: Saint-Gilles (Parvis), Brussels (Place Sainctelette, Vieux Marché aux Grains, Tour et Taxis, Boulevard du Régent, Boulevard Albert II), Saint-Josse (Place Saint-Josse), and Anderlecht (Abattoirs and Place de la Résistance).

A call for entries was issued to a large number of artists, who were asked to submit an original plan based on 3D images of five emblematic objects. Over 120 plans were submitted to a panel of professionals, who finally selected 30 works. Several art colleges and a number of fashion and design institutions in Brussels also took part in the project, contributing an additional five works.

At the end of Brusselicious XXL, these unusual works can be purchased by private individuals, companies or institutions.
